The human ear, an organ of hearing and equilibrium that detects and analyzes sounds by transduction ( or the conversion of sound waves into electrochemical impulses) and maintains the sense of balance How the ear works is sound waves are gathered by the outer ear and sent down the ear canal to the eardrum. The sound waves cause the eardrum to vibrate, which sets the three tiny bones in the middle ear into motion. the motion of the bones causes the fluid in the inner ear or cochlea to move. Our ears play a crucial role in how we communicate with those around us. They are responsible for hearing and our sense of balance. When your ears aren't functioning properly, you can experience an array of symptoms: including hearing loss, cognitive decline, balance issues, and delayed speech processing The Eustachian tube, or Pharyngotympanic tube, in the middle ear equalizes air pressure in the middle ear with the air pressure in the atmosphere. This process helps humans retain their balance. The vestibular complex, in the inner ear, is also important to balance because it contains receptors that regulate a sense of equilibrium. The inner ear is connected to the vestibulocochlear nerve, which carries sound and equilibrium information to the brain. Ears are delicate organs that can often have problems due to damage, bacteria or even changes in the environment. Ear infections: commonly seen in babies and younger children, common symptoms of ear infections are drainage from the ear, , hearing loss, ear ache, fever, headaches, pain in the ear and a feeling of fullness in the ear. Meniere's disease: a disease of the inner ear that may result of fluid problems in the ear. Pericarditis refers to inflammation of the pericardium, two thin layers of a sac-like tissue that surround the heart, hold it in place and help it work. A common symptom of pericarditis is chest pain, caused by the sac’s layers becoming inflamed and possibly rubbing against the heart. It may feel like pain from a heart attack Pericarditis can be attributed to several factors, including viral, bacterial, fungal and other infections. Other possible causes of pericarditis include heart attack or heart surgery, other medical conditions, injuries and medications. Pericarditis can be acute, meaning it happens suddenly and typically doesn’t last long. Or the condition may be "chronic," meaning that it develops over time and may take longer to treat. Both types of pericarditis can disrupt your heart’s normal rhythm or function. In rare cases, pericarditis can have very serious consequences, even leading to death. Other names for Pericarditis are: Idiopathic pericarditis (no known cause) Acute pericarditis Chronic pericarditis Chronic effusive pericarditis and chronic constrictive pericarditis (forms of chronic pericarditis) Recurrent pericarditis The cause of pericarditis is often unknown, though viral infections are a common cause. Pericarditis often occurs after a respiratory infection. Chronic, or recurring pericarditis is usually the result of autoimmune disorders such as lupus, scleroderma and rheumatoid arthritis. These are disorders in which the body’s immune system makes antibodies that mistakenly attack the body’s tissues or cells. Other possible causes of pericarditis are: Heart attack and heart surgery Kidney failure, HIV/AIDS, cancer, tuberculosis and other health problems Injuries from accidents or radiation therapy Certain medicines, like phenytoin (an anti-seizure medicine), warfarin and heparin (both blood-thinning medicines), and procainamide (a medicine to treat irregular heartbeats) Pericarditis affects people of all ages, but men 20 to 50 years old are more likely to develop pericarditis than others. Among those treated for acute pericarditis, 15 to 30 percent may experience the condition again, with a small number eventually developing chronic pericarditis. Numbness. Sciatica pain may be accompanied by numbness in the back of the leg. Sometimes, tingling and/or weakness may also be present. One-sided symptoms. Sciatica typically affects one leg. The condition often results in a feeling of heaviness in the affected leg.1 Rarely, both legs may be affected together. Posture induced symptoms. Sciatica symptoms may feel worse while sitting, trying to stand up, bending the spine forward, twisting the spine, lying down, and/or while coughing. The symptoms may be relieved by walking or applying a heat pack over the rear pelvic region. It is advisable to treat sciatica as early as possible in order to avoid the progression of symptoms. Sciatica treatment may include both nonsurgical and surgical methods. Typically, nonsurgical methods are tried first. Surgery may be indicated when the underlying cause is severe and/or progressive neurological deficits such as leg weakness occurs.
